Paul and Stephanie were wading through the water that was covering one of the Kostroma’s lower decks. The water was only waist deep, but it was cold as ice. This wasn’t an internal leak, it was too cold, ocean water was being allowed to directly enter the ship with nothing pumping it out and was slowly filling the deck a little deeper every second. They’d only been in the water for five minutes, but already Stephanie was feeling the chill.

“You know I don’t get paid enough for this, its bloody freezing.” She stated through chattering teeth.

“Try not to think about it, put your mind on something else or it’ll only make it feel worse.” Sound advice from Paul, but one that Stephanie decided had no context in the real world.

“You sure you know where you’re going?”

Paul shrugged

“A boat’s a boat, there can only be so many layouts and I’ve been on a couple of cargo ships before, I’m fairly certain about where the engine room should be.” He just hoped that he was right.

To Stephanie, ‘fairly certain’ didn’t mean ‘definitely sure’ and didn’t fill her with total confidence. Something was filling her with dread, but she didn’t know what; was it the ship, was it the darkness or was it the water or could it be a combination of all of them. The only thing that Stephanie did know was that she didn’t like been waist deep in water what appeared to be pure black and or which she couldn’t see the bottom. It was only made worse by the freezing temperature.

She turned the flashlight to look down into the water, depending on the size of the hole, any marine life could have made it into the ship and she didn’t like the idea of something swimming around her feet, especially not if it was feeling a little hungry. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting to see, but an image of a shark kept coming into her mind although she couldn’t imagine the hole would be that big.

For a moment there appeared to be movement in the water by Stephanie’s legs and she quickly spun the flashlight down and stared into the murky blackness. Just what the hell had passed her? Nothing seemed to happen, perhaps she’d just imagined movement, a trick of a nervous mind. Suddenly the water parted and a body popped up directly in front of Stephanie. She let out a high-pitched scream and fell backwards into the icy water, arms flailing, and caused an almighty splash with water spraying in all directions.

Paul turned at the scream and ran directly over to Stephanie, grabbing her shoulders to keep her afloat and from going under.

“What is it?” he shouted at her.

She pointed towards the body that was floating in front of her. Paul looked at it; the body was lying face down in the water and was just floating in one spot, the water was starting to settle again around it. There appeared to be no movement from the body which was dressed in blue overalls and appeared bloated and rotted.
